maus

I really enjoyed reading the novel because it was very well written and was told through the eyesight of a survivor, which makes the book more personal. the Holocaust is an actual event, the book tells so many emotions not only for the characters of the book but also for the readers. Maus is the first comic book that I have ever read One thing that I found interesting was the fact that the author included himself in the story, it wasn't just about his mother and father during World War II, it was also about him.. By adding his own experience with his father in it made it even more in depth. it showed his father's side of World War II and the Holocaust but it also showed the author's opinions of his father. It showed his father not only pre war and during the war but also very post war too. It showed how much of an affect the war had on his father and how it changed him.. When I started reading Maus I assumed that it was going to be strictly one man's story.I found it unexpected that it had more viewpoints.

Slaughter house 5

I thought that this novel wasn't one of my favorites, but I did find it to be interesting and made me think back into time. I hate books about wars them books are so boring and they are all the same stories. To me the most noticeable of this novel was the phrase so its goes. This phrase is referring to the idea that although a person may be dead and gone in a particular moment, they are still alive in all the other moments of his or her life. Starting off kind of slow it definitely picked up speed quickly. In the beginning when he describes how the guy gets crushed by a car it seemed not to bother him at all. He seemed okay about it which makes me realize what he’s seen in the war
The people in the novel believe that all things repeat themselves and that all things already happened.
They also believe that people on earth think of time as a progression, which to them is a not the right way to look at things. Even though when you are already on earth your life is already destined and there is no changing that at all. So you just have to deal with it and cope with things as they are and as they come

waiting For Godot

I thought Waiting for Godot play, was horrible to read.

The characters Vladimir and Estragon have both decided that nothing is worth doing in the play. I also found it interesting how the first act contains the same action as the second act. Beckett uses repetition in that sense in his play.

They think about committing suicide but they feel its not worth it because one of them will not be able to make it in the crude world alone. Estragon is always messing with his boot to try and find the thing stuck in it, and Vladimir is constantly searching for the uncomfortable item in his hat. This seems to make sense considering the fact that Beckett, like many of the other writers we have read, had to deal with World War I. Knowing that I can kinda of understand why the play has the type of scenery and feeling that is has. I didnt really understand this play and will never revisit this play again after this class. Who cares about how to put a shoe on and whats in your hat nobody cares. You was suppose to learn how to put your shoe on a a kid.

Their Eyes Were Watching GOD

This is the second best book we have read in this class. I think the reason is because I had already read this book in high school.
The book and movie was good even though there were some parts that were in the book that wasnt in the movie. The movie gives us a visual picture of what was going on.
Janie grandmother was a woman who wanted her grand daughter to be with a man but with a man of her choice. She wanted her to be with a man who was much older than her. Whats the purpose of that, what fun is that going to be. None at all. Jamie should have been able to go out and find her own man the man of her choice. Janie I believe was trying to find herself and what she wanted out of life throughout the whole book. But she was just going through way too many men for me in a short time period.
When she got with the mayor she figured everything would be okay but it wasnt. he still wanted to rule her and act as though he was the master and she the slav which isnt right if you are in a relationship there should be some type of respect there for eachother and for the relationship. He didnt want her around any men because they were looking at her so he made her dress as though she was older than what she really was but that didnt work men still loved her.
This book can be related to todays world. how many people use people for money and date people fo rthe wrong reasons and wonder why they not happy. janie is an example of a person who searching for love and want let love find you. When she was with tea cake she was herslef and happy. but then she killed him. Odd. But all in all this book is a learning lesson to people outh there who looking for love . you have to find yourself first then find the love of your life. Since she never had nothing she loved the people that were wealthy and had more that she had.

AS I LAY DYING

"As I Lay Dying" I really enjoyed getting the views and thoughts of the characters from outsiders . It really helped me to understand the characters. One part that really caught my attention was the fact that Cash is preparing Addie's casket while she is sick and dying, right outside of her window where she is dying. I found this part to be aw kard if a person is dying I dont think that they should be reminded everyday of theirr life. This just makes them wondering when that final day is coming. What person in their right mind wants to see what they will be buried in nobody should even think about that. Addie is a little crazy if you ask me or not just in the right state of mind. Addie has one dream and that to see jewel before she dies. Thats like everybody dreams to do something or say something to that one person before you finally fall off the face of the earth. thats why everyday should be lived as it was the one last one you had

MRS.DALLOWAY

She is a very independent woman that why she buys her own flowers. We need more woman like this instead of depending on a man for everything. Mrs. Dalloway is a book that I have never reador heard of untill now. Maybe because I dont read novels unless I have too. This story jumps from person to person which leaves with the ability as to who is speaking and the person thoughts. You have to use imagination to foloow through, in the beginning so much happended all at the same time you just was what the hell is going on here. The one thing that stood out to me was that Peter liked her even though he was a lilttle on the crazy side. mrs. dalloway is to me trying to fit in with the social norm and just doesn't know how to exactly do that. so she is confused as to how people will look at her and her attitude towards life. As a college student we feel how are we going to fit in with the social norm. So we do what others do and hopes it works. I love how we are finally reading about a woman and something that makes sense other than the crazy wasteland

WasteLand pt.2

The wasteland is still confusing to me. After class on thursday I had a little more understanding of this poem. I understand the fact that everything will be better if it just dies. This is true because when everything dies then the worl d would be better because then there is nothing to do if everything and everyone is dead. But the wasteland is still a confusing poem to read and i will never read it again once i leave out of english 204. I dont beleive how elliot could think he was smarter than anybody with the type of work he publsihed. Also if he is poet how can he assume that the reader has already read the other authours works and have a clear understanding of these other writers. That was a dumb thing to think elliot if you are a poet. You are to explian yourself in such a way the reader can get an understanding of your works. When reading the wasteland you have the wrong picture in your mind and thats clearly wrong . No more T.S. Elliot!!!!!!

The wasteland

The Waste Land was a very confusing play for any human being even to lay their eyes on. I didn't understand what this poem was talking about. The poem was going from one thing to another like going from night to day without no purpose behind it at all.The seasons were the first thing that made me think, what do the seasons has to do with anything. April being the curliest month with flowers booming. That made about 5% sense to me. because that was actually true.

The fire sermon
This section had to take place on the side of the beach or some type of water. The words that the section starts off as if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. the tent sank and rats were running pass. Oh how nasty that would be if you were on a vacation. This section was dumb also just like the rest of them were. When i first read the title I thought he was going to refer to when moses were speaking on the mountain top in the Bible. But guess not huh?

A Game of Chess
This section put me in the mind frame of the game chess because in chess you have high class and the lower class pieces. The upper class society has the nice things where as the low class had nothing. I got that two women were at the bar and it was about to close while they were having a conversation. Li husband is in the and the other woman asked her why did you get married if you didn't want any kids. In society everybody don't want kids or love kids. Most people get married for the wrong reason and LI got married for the right reason which is LOVE.

After reading this poem, I am left confused still and want to know what was the author thinking about when he wrote the poem. What was he thinking do anybody in the class know? does the author really even know?

Lesson Learned aka Beyond the Horizon

The play that I liked the most was Beyond The Horizon. The reason why is because this play has alot to do with my life when I went away to college for the first time. When I had to make a big choice that I wasnt use to, which was leaving my parents for the first time. Robert wanted to go and explore new things and his life but his brother Andrew wanted him to stay on the farm with the family. Robert wanted to become a man and being a man on his own.

As a college student I had to leave some things behind and follow my dreams that I wanted to do in life. When you are making a big decision in life you have to think about the people you are leaving behind and the things that will will be left behind. If the people really love you they will support you no matter what.

Robert parents really didnt want him to leave them because they were so used to him being there with them all the time. They knew they would have had to adjust to not seeing him on the daily anymore. The brothers shouldnt have let ruth come between them because blood is thicker than water no matter what.
This play really was meant for me to read because some of the same things that happened in the play happened to me in my life before. The most sad part was that andrew fell for Ruth when she didnt even really love him, she claimed to love andrew again. Then andrew didnt love her anymore so now the joke was on ruth. Thats what she gets for trying to break up a family and it backfired on her all in her face. Also Robert shouldnt have died he already went through alot of emotional stress , he should've have been the one to succeed in the play and ruth should have died.
All and all this play was a good one and it had some life learned lessons in there. Never let anyone come between your family and also follow your dreams no matter the situation. You only live life once so live it to the fullest.

The metamorphosis

As I began to read the book I see that Gregor turns into this big bug. And from this pint on his life does a complete turn around once he realizes that now he can’t get out of the bed. When I think about this one little sentence as the book opens, the question pops in my mind what would I do if I woke up one morning and I was bug and couldn’t get out the bed. I might have weird thoughts as to killing myself because I wouldn’t fit in the society.

Gregor is now a bug and now has to deal with the problem of knowing how his family would respond to him when they see he is a bug instead of a human. Gregor feels that now he wouldn’t fit in society or in the work place. He has to come up with ideas that will allow people to look at him as the hard working man he once was that was the supporter of the family.

Once the family notices that he is a bug their whole attitude changes and now they don’t want to be bothered with him at all. Which to me is wrong because when he was bringing home the family income everything was okay. So now this leaves him with the idea of was my family using me for money? The answer to that question should be yes. Because later on in the story he finds out that the family has enough money to live off of for a couple of years and really don’t need him anymore. Also that the father can actually go out and work to keep income coming inside the house. Where as they had Gregor working so he can help pay off the debt they had with his boss, because they told him they had no money.

This situation happens to a lot of people in the world today when the parents are old and the child still remains living at home with the parents. Then the child is the person who brings home the income and all of sudden the parents come down with an illness. And now they cant work and depending on the child and the when the child changes in some different type of way, they treat them like they are not apart of the family anymore.

Lastly the really bad part is that father just beats him and throws apples at him as if he is ashamed of his own son. That’s sad because why would you beat your child because they have been transformed into a bug. Despite this problem he is still his child no matter what happens.

This book really opened my eyes up to how some people look a different people because of the way that they has changed and cant do anything about it. I just wished he could’ve changed back into a human and told his parents off because of the way that they have been treating him since he became a bug.
